A New Jersey mayor was hospitalised after entering a burning house to save a neighbour.

Newark Mayor Cory Booker rescued the woman from the top floor of her house in the city's Upper Clinton Hill area.

A member of the mayor's security team also saved three residents from the house before Mayor Booker arrived back from a television interview and was told of the blaze.

Booker was said to have suffered second-degree burns as well as smoke inhalation but has been discharged from hospital.
