Our area correspondents stated that the Sinhalese and Tamils celebrated the New Year which dawned at 7.20p.m yesterday in a grand scale.

The Punya Kalaya was from 12.56p.m yesterday to 1.44a.m today.

The auspicious time for preparing meals was scheduled at 7.42p.m yesterday.

Starting work, engaging in the first transactions of the New Year and partaking in meals was scheduled at 10.28p.m yesterday.

The people all over the country engaged in religious observances at Buddhist and Hindu temples during the Punya Kalaya.

New Year functions are being held in many parts of the country today which include traditional sports items.

Today the tradition of worshiping elders, relatives and neighbours with a sheaf of betal and exchanging sweetmeats will take place.
