The elephant which had fallen into the 'Samurdhi wewa' in the Weerawila kudagammana 11-area, upon having being shot at in one of its legs, has been brought to shore.

According to the grama seva officer of the Thissapura area Sunil Palitha, the elephant had been brought to shore with assistance of forest officials.

Speaking to our News Team the grama seva officer of the Thissapura area noted that the elephant's condition was grave.

Meanwhile, the elephant cared for by the Kotte Raja Maha Buddhist Temple, which was named ‘Lanka’ has succumbed to its injuries upon having being struck by lightning.

The elephant which had been tied to a tree in the 'Ingiriya-Akkra 20 area' was struck by lightning subsequent to the tree it was tied to was struck.

The deceased elephant is believed to be around 19 years of age.

The final rights of the beast will be performed this evening. 

Meanwhile, a couple who had been residing at an adjacent house to where the lightning strike took place have been admitted to hospital due to shock.
