Reports say that about 50 persons including children were hospitalised last week due to the quality of drinking water provided to residents within the Thalawakale Lidula Urban Council limits.

The Mayor of the Council Ashoka Sepala said that 15 persons were admitted to the Thalawakale Lidula base hospital yesterday alone.

A Thalawakale Lidula base hospital spokesperson replying to a query on this said that the majority of persons admitted to the hospital were suspected of having contracted dysentery.

Although previously the Water Supply Board had not provided water to this area, the Board began distribution after a revelation by our news team.

The mayor said that there was a problem about the quality of the water supplied.

The mayor added that samples of drinking water provided by the Water Supply Board would be taken to Colombo today for analysis.

However Nuwara Eliya District Secretary D P G Kumarasiri appealed to the people to boil water before drinking.

The District Secretary also said that an investigation was being carried out against the organisation that had distributed sub-standard drinking water.
