The number of dengue cases reported during the first three months this year has risen threefold in comparison to the same time period last year.

Epidemiology Unit of the Ministry of Health has recorded 9402 dengue cases in the first three months of 2012 as opposed to 3103 in 2011.

As at today, 43 dengue related deaths have been reported from amongst 9657 cases.

The majority of these cases have been reported from the Colombo District at a percentage of 50.84%.

Meanwhile, the Ministry has requested school principals to allocate the first day of the new school term for cleaning up the school compound.

The Ministry states that with the two week school holiday and the incessant rainy weather, the likelihood of dengue mosquito breeding grounds within the school premises has increased.
