The funeral of the individual who was allegedly beaten while in the Wadduwa Police holding cell was held this afternoon at the Wadduwa cemetery.
During the funeral procession, a peaceful protest against the killing was conducted by the residents of the area.
The 42 year old victim, who hailed from the South Thalpitiya Fishing Residencies, was found dead in the Wadduwa Police holding cell on the 15th.
The ASP of Wadduwa Abeyratne Dissanayaka earlier tried to obtain an order from the Panadura Magistrate to stop a public funeral for the fear of public unrest.
The Panadura Magistrate R S A Dissanayaka issued an order to the police to let the funeral proceed and asked the son of the deceased to ensure that there would be no public unrest.
Meanwhile the Senior DIG for the Western Province Anura Senanayaka had visited the deceased's home to pay his respects.
The Panadura SSP H M Dharmasena stated that the DIG had promised the relatives of the victim that an impartial investigation in to the death would be conducted.
There have been 3 transfers including that of an OIC due to this incident.
However, Police Media Spokesperson SP Ajith Rohana stated that he is unable to release a statement until the autopsy of the victim has been completed.
