Sri Lanka's renovated high speed Southern coastal railway line from Colombo to Matara will be opened to the public today.
Sri Lanka Railways General Manager B.A.P. Ariyaratne said that the modernized railway line is the country's first high speed line and it will allow trains to run at speeds of 100 km per hour.
The Southern coastal line was reconstructed in three stages.
Construction of the 42 km Galle-Matara segment in the first stage of upgrading the coastal line was completed in February 2011 at a cost of US$ 36 million.
