The Spanish cruiser "Infanta Elena" has freed a Sri Lankan fishing vessel that had been kidnapped six months ago by Somali pirates, as reported by the Ministry of Defence.

The release took place within fifty miles of the coast of Tanzania, between the islands of Pemba and Mafia, when the crew of patrol boats sighted the "Nimesha Duwa."

This ship had been hijacked off the coast of Sri Lanka six months ago and since then was used as a mother ship by Somali pirates and, according to Defence, appears to be related to a failed attack on a merchant ship in the Mozambique Channel as well.

On board were seven suspected Somali pirates and six fishermen who were the initial crew of the ship.

They have been medically reviewed on board and have been provided with food and water.
