Marawila coast is facing severe coastal erosion

The Doowawatte area on the Marawila coast is reported to be experiencing severe coastal erosion.

Residents in the area state that about 500m of the coast line has already eroded.

They added that about 20 coconut trees and two small shrines built on the beach have already been washed away.

About 15 homes and 2 tourist hotels are also under threat.

Residents also indicate that the erosion began about 10 years ago.

When we did our own investigating into this issue, we found out that the Coast Conservation Department had taken measures to stop the coastal erosion in this area today.

Several residents who were on site explained further.



Meanwhile, the Met Department states that the disturbance in the atmosphere surrounding Sri Lanka still prevails.

Duty Meteorologist Gayana Hendawitharana explained further.
