A statement was made in the Colombo Magistrate’s Court today alleging that the police officers who arrived in Wanathamulla to arrest several suspects were under the influence of alcohol.

The lawyer appearing on behalf of these suspects stated that the police officers were intoxicated at the time of the raid.

Colombo Additional Magistrate Praharsha Ranasinghe informed the lawyer to make a complaint to senior officers of the police department regarding the officers who were allegedly drunk on duty.

The additional magistrate ordered 2 of the 23 suspects to be remanded while the other 21 were released on personal bail.

She also called for proceedings on the case to be taken up once again on the 16th of July.

Meanwhile, relatives of the suspects staged a protest in front of the Hulstdorf Courts this morning against the arrest of their family members.

Some of the residents of Wanathamulla expressed their concerns.

Meanwhile a human rights petition was filed at the Human Rights Commission stating that the rights of the suspects were violated during their arrest.

The petition was filed by the Activists for Human Rights Association.

Member of the association Udul Premarathne spoke to the media after filing the petition.
