The recently held Population & Housing Census which was carried out island wide has revealed that Sri Lanka's population at present has exceeded the 20 million mark.
However according to a senior officer attached to the Department of Census & Statistics there is said to be a decline in the growth of the population.
An island wide census was finally carried out in the year 1981.
During that year the population within Sri Lanka was estimated at 14 million 800 thousand.
Subsequently a census was implemented in the year 2001, although the Northern & Eastern parts of the island were not encompassed.
However based on the information made available by the relevant district secretaries the population during that stage in Sri Lanka was believed to be at 17 million 800 thousand.
Consequently the latest census carried out had revealed that the current population in the country had exceeded 20 million 200 thousand.
Informed sources within the department of Census & Statistics acknowledge that the finalised report regarding the census is in its final stages & will be presented to President Mahinda Rajapaksa once he arrives in the island upon conclusion of his South Korean tour.
