The Lanka Teacher Services Association has accused the Department of Education in the Western province of misappropriating funds allocated for students development purposes.

According to the LTSA a felicitation ceremony titled "Supasan-Abhimani 2011" is slated to be held in Colombo on the 28th of April.

In view of this ceremony, the Department of Education in the Western province had issued written notice to each zonal education office to contribute a sum of 800,000 rupees, which will be utilised in publishing a souvenir.

However during a principals meeting held yesterday it was instructed by the relevant officials concerned to obtain this sum of money from the school development fund or the school sustenance account.

Chief Secretary of the LTSA Joseph Stallin expressed these views to our news team in this regard.

Meanwhile the Chief Minister of the Western Province & Western Provincial Council Minister of Education Prasanna Ranatunga stated that trade unions were against this particular felicitation ceremony, and thus their comments.
