07th May not a holiday for teachers

Monday, the 07th of May was announced as a special government holiday.

However, the Lanka Teachers’ Association alleges that according to the circular issued by the Secretary to the Ministry of Education this holiday given by the government has been grabbed away from school teachers.

Speaking to our News Team the General Secretary of the Lanka Teachers’ Association Mahinda Jayasinghe stated that the Sheela Samadhana programme which was scheduled to be conducted at every school on the 04th of May in view of the Wesak Poya Day has been rescheduled for the 07th of May.

Through the circular which was issued by the Secretary to the Ministry of Education H.M. Gunasekara this Sheela Samadhana programme has been rescheduled for the 07th of May.

The General Secretary of the Lanka Teachers’ Association Mahinda Jayasinghe pointed out that as a result the teachers have to forgo this special holiday.

Although our News Team attempted to contact the Secretary to the Ministry of Education to inquire with this regard, our attempts were futile.

However, when we inquired the Deputy Minister of Education Vijith Vijayamuni Soysa with this regard, he stated that this issue has been reported and that he would take measures to look into the matter.
