The Supreme Court today dismissed the Petition filed by JVP against the Government’s decision to increase bus fares.
In the event of the petition that was taken up for hearing today before 3 member panel of Judges headed by Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayaka it was decided to dismiss the petition devoid of any fee.
The Petitioners pointed out that according to the National Bus Fare Policy the bus fares could be increased by a margin of 15.8 percent.
The Petition also states that the Government’s decision to increase bus fares by a 20 percent margin has violated the national policy pertaining to bus fare hikes.
The Lawyer representing the Government stated in court that the Government’s decision to increase bus fares by 20 percent was due to the increase in price of fuel and the depreciation of the rupee against the Dollar.
Accordingly, the Supreme Court decided to dismiss the petition as the petition proved to be baseless.
