Tense situation in Vilachchiya brought under control

Police media spokesperson S.P. Ajith Rohana states that the tense situation which had arisen in the Vilachchiya are in connection to a treasure hunting incident at present has been brought under control.

Ares residents had notified police that a group of persons had been excavating the Hiwalpitiya River last night which is located in Dunumadalawa, Wilachchiya utilizing backhoes.

Subsequently a group of police officers had arrived at the area. When inquired by our news team area residents charged that the group had been excavating the river under STF protection.

 

When we contacted Police Media Spokesperson SP Ajith Rohana, it was stated that the tense situation which is reported to have arisen in the area had been sparred upon the arrival of the police special task force officers, who had had attempted to arrest those responsible.

The STF had been alerted that an unknown group had been scouring the area for ancient artefacts.

However to our correspondent a ditch which runs about 10 feet deep could be witnessed in the area along side some ceremonial material.
