Six individuals including an owner of a paddy mill were arrested while attempting to dig up treasure in the Pollonnaruwa-Aralaganwila area.

The Special Task Force of the Aralaganwila police made the arrest early this morning.

The arrested including the businessmen are residents of the area.

The police also found treasure hunting equipment and explosives in their possession.

Meanwhile, a tense situation pertaining to another treasure hunting incident was reported from the Vilachchiya area in Anuradhapura.

The residents of the area were informed of an attempt to use backhoes on the reservoir embankment.

The residents allege that the treasure hunting was carried out under the protection of the Special Task Force.

They added that they were assaulted by STF officers when they attempted to enter the area.

However, refuting this allegation police media spokesperson SP Ajith Rohana stated that the STF was there to arrest the treasure hunters.
