Giving preference to amisa & prathipaththi pooja, Buddhists islandwide celebrate the dawn of Vesak today. According to our provincial correspondents devotees are said to have congregated in temples since the break of dawn today.
The State Vesak Festival which will mark the closure of 2600th Sambuddhatwa Jayanthi, will commence under the auspices of President Mahinda Rajapaksa at 3 PM tomorrow before the historic Temple of The Tooth.
A large number of Clergy as well as lay devotees are due to partake in this ceremony. However it was noted by our provincial correspondents that a large number of devotees had flocked to the historic Temple of The Tooth within the course of today.
Meanwhile significant crowds are also said to have gathered at the Thanthirimale Rajamaha Viharaya,upon the conclusion of the 30 year war. Several religious observances have been organised at the vihara in lieu of Vesak.
