The reconstructed Kandy-Mahiyangana Road was declared open by President Mahinda Rajapakse this morning.

The opening ceremony was held in close proximity to Gurulupotha near the 16th bend.

The ceremonious ribbon which was cut by the President was adorned with jasmines.

The President also unveiled the commemorative plaque and viewing station.

The “18 Wanguwa” road which was a rather narrow stretch has been broadened to a 50 foot road at a cost of 5 billion rupees.

Previously travel from Kandy to Mahiyangana would take atleast 3 hours.

However with the construction of the new road, travel time has been reduced to 90 minutes.
