Today is World Thalassemia Day.
Paediatric Specialist at the Badulla General Hospital Dr. K R C P Kekulawela states that around 269 million of the world’s population carry the Thalassemia gene.
He added that of the Sri Lankan population 0.4 million have been identified as the Thalassemia gene carriers.
He also stated that around 100,000 Thalassemia positive births are reported worldwide while Sri Lanka records around 80 births every year.
These births are predominantly reported from the Western, North Central, Uva and North Western Provinces.
The Health Ministry allocates around 300,000 rupees a year for treating these patients.
Dr.Kekulawela added that a special program in lieu of World Thalassemia Day will be held at the Badulla Nursing Hospital under the patronage of Minister of Health Maithreepala Sirisena.
