Russia gives assurance to Sri Lanka.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergev Lavrov told reporters in Moscow yesterday that Russia is against any unilateral investigation on the conflict in Sri Lanka.

Speaking to reporters following a meeting with Minister of External Affairs Prof. G L Peiris, the Russian Foreign Minister said that it was wrong to conduct an investigation on Sri Lanka without the consent of the Sri Lankan government or the United Nations Security Council.

Minister Peiris is on an official visit to Russia and had lengthy discussions with the Russian Foreign Minister yesterday.

Lavrov said that at the meeting it was agreed to deepen corporation between both countries in all spheres.

He said that Russia and Sri Lanka have agreed to increase the number of flights between Moscow and Colombo.

The Russian Minister said that his country has given priority to Sri Lanka in the field of hydrocarbon exploration, energy, Military Corporation and tourism.

He added that Sri Lanka’s experience in counter terrorism operations is worth studying and they will develop corporation in this area.

He also said that Russia supports the Sri Lankan leadership’s efforts to overcome the consequences of the conflict and ensure national reconciliation.

Responding to a question at the press briefing he noted that there was no reason for Russia not to trust the objectives of the Lessons Learned and Reconciliation Commission.
