India, Benin and Spain will be appointed as a troika to review Sri Lanka during the Universal Periodic Review scheduled for November, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights said on its website.

All three countries voted with the United States during a key Human Rights Council vote, where the US managed to pass a resolution calling for accountability and reconciliation in Sri Lanka.

The UPR is a process which involves a review of the human rights records of all 192 UN Member States once every four years, and Sri Lanka’s representatives during the previous HRC sessions reiterated that the island’s rights record should only be reviewed at the UPR.

Meanwhile the official tenure of UN Human Rights Chief Navaneethan Pillay has been extended by a further 2 years, despite American opposition on her statement concerning Israel.
