113 persons have been placed under arrest by the Colombo Anti Corruption unit this morning charged with having attempted to leave the country illegally via sea, in search of foreign employment.
According to the police media unit the group had been intended to be sent to Australia and another undisclosed location.
The lot had been arrested during raids carried out in the Galle Face area as well as Negombo.
A majority who had been arrested are believed to be residents of Chilaw & Negombo.
6 persons who had acted as subcontractors in the smuggling deal have also been arrested by police, while the kingpin of the racket is believed to be a resident of the Chilaw area.
It is reported that each individual had been charged 200,000 rupees while the aggregate sum has been calculated at 31.6 million rupees.
One lorry as well as 7 dolphin vans has also been confiscated by police, on which the suspects had been transported to meet their ferry.
According to the police media unit the suspects are due to be presented before courts today.
