Close on the heels of losing his cabinet portfolio, Erik Solheim, one-time Norwegian envoy handling the Sri Lankan peace process has suffered another setback with the government overlooking his bid for the post of the country’s UN ambassador.

Diplomatic sources reported that the Director General of the foreign ministry Geir Pedersen, who visited Colombo last December, was expected to be appointed Norway’s permanent representative in New York.

Following the recent cabinet shake-up, Solheim revealed his intention to give up politics for the time being to assume the diplomatic post.

The news of Solheim’s latest misfortune has come in the wake of Sri Lanka launching a fresh campaign overseas to highlight LTTE atrocities.
