Australian media reports that a boatload of asylum seekers have arrived at Cocos Islands, 2750 kilometres north-west of Perth, overnight.
The large boat is said to have had around 40 men on board.
Volunteers were now helping the island's two Federal Police and Customs officials to process and quarantine the asylum seekers.
Around 1586 Sri Lankan's had arrived in Australia this year alone seeking to claim refugee status while last year the number had stood at 211.
Moreover according to the 'Australian' during the year 2009, 736 persons had entered the country illegally via sea, with 536 making their entry in 2010.
In conclusion the 'Australian' states that there has been a significant rise in the number of refugee claimants arriving at Australia's shores this year.
