The Indian government has decided to extend the ban on the LTTE by a further two years.

Indian Minister of Home Affairs P Chidambaram confirmed this in a statement to media yesterday.

The minister added that the extension would come in to affect under the Act for Prevention of Unauthorized Activities.

The Indian government declared the LTTE a banned organization in 1994 after an LTTE suicide bomber assassinated former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1991.
