35 lives were lost during the first five months of this year alone due to accidents that occurred at unprotected railway crossings.

The total number of casualties for the whole of last year was recorded at 85.

The latest incident reported was when a mother and son were killed on the spot at an unprotected crossing in Mirigama last week.

The motor-cycle the deceased were travelling on was hit by the Badulla – Colombo train.

However, the Railway Department states that people’s negligence results in the large number of accidents and casualties.

We spoke to Minister of Transport Kumara Welgama regarding accidents at unprotected railway crossings.

The Minister noted that a proposal is to be submitted regarding this matter for cabinet approval in the future.
