A London court has sentenced Ven.Pahalagama Somaratana Thera who had been charged with sexually abusing an underage girl in the 1970s in London to seven years in prison.

The Chief Incumbent of the Thames Buddhist Vihara in Croydon, was found to be guilty of four counts of sexual abuse by the courts last month.

The monk was arrested in September 2011 at Heathrow Airport.

The alleged sexual abuse had taken place at the Chiswick Temple in East London during 1978-79 when the monk first arrived in England, in 1978 at the age of 32 years.

The court has ordered to enter the name of the monk to the sex offender's registry without a limit on time.

The court has further ordered the 65-year-old monk to refrain from taking part in any activity involving children.
