President Mahinda Rajapakse states that modern day leaders should emulate the teachings of Lord Buddha to ensure the betterment of humanity.
Speaking at the United Nations 2600th Sambuddathwa Jayanthi celebrations in Thailand, the president noted that the teachings are relevant to the present as well.
The President noted that if modern day leaders follow the ten principles of Buddhist governance and rule with compassion both the rulers and the people would be victorious.
Over 2500 Buddhist representatives from 58 countries participated in the function held in Bangkok today.
The Presidential Media Unit noted that Sri Lanka was represented by over 400 Buddhist monks.
The President also stated that although separatist rebels attempted to spread religious hatred in Sri Lanka by attacking places of worship, the Sri Lankan people acted in a manner so as to diffuse their attempts.
