A catastrophe that could have occurred on the Upcountry train track was avoided yesterday.
The Colombo-Kandy express stalled inside the Kadugannawa – Balana 9th tunnel due to an engine failure.
Over a 1000 passengers were left in the dark when the lights in the train also went off after the train stalled causing much panic.
However, a railway spokesperson confirmed that many of the passengers had gotten off the train and made their way on foot to the Balana station.
Three trains were initially brought in to remove the express from the track but each one stalled in its attempt.
Finally a fourth train was brought in to remove the express and the other trains.
Train services on the upcountry track came to a standstill for a considerable time due to this incident.
