Councillor Nizam Ismail, a Sri Lankan Muslim, has been recently elected as the new Mayor of Harrow in England.
He is the first Sri Lankan origin Muslim Mayor in the UK.
Harrow boasts of being one of the most multicultural areas in the country and a few years ago another Councillor of Sri Lankan origin, Mano Dharmarajah, was Mayor.
Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner in the UK Dr. Chris Nonis was among the distinguished guests invited for the mayoral election.
A large gathering of Sri Lankans were also at the Harrow Civic Centre to witness the election.
