Security Commander in the East Major General Lal Perera while taking part in an observation tour in the Thoppigala region stated that Thoppigala would be opened for the general public in the next 2 months.

He further stated that the area would be transformed into a cultural park which would showcase the history of the east.

Military operations to liberate Thoppigala which was a LTTE stronghold for over 10 years and a key strategic point in the Humanitarian Mission in liberating the North and East began on the 25th of April of 2007 and ended on the 12th of July 2007.

Over 700 LTTE carders and 48 Sri Lankan soldiers lost their lives during the intense fighting in Thoppigala.
