A bill which proscribes clergy being elected to parliament has come under heavy scrutiny by all relevant parties at present.
The bill has already been entered into the parliamentary agenda, by UNP MP Wijedasa Rajapaksa.
Earlier on the Catholic Council stated that it was in favour of this private members motion.
Moreover various views in this regard are being expressed by Buddhist clergy.

However Chancellor of the Kelaniya University Dr. Walamitiyawe Kusala Dhamma Thero states that recommendations provided by the Commission for Buddha Sasana disapproves of Buddhist clergy engaging in politics.
