Pope Benedict the 16th met with President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday.
Their conversation was focused on efforts to promote reconciliation in the nation.
A brief Vatican statement released after the meeting said: “The hope was expressed that a global joint solution may soon be found corresponding to the legitimate expectations of all the parties involved.”
The Pope and President Rajapaksa also discussed the contributions of the Catholic Church to the welfare of the people of Sri Lanka, especially in the fields of health care, education, and social welfare.
Meanwhile President Rajapakse who participated in Queen Elizabeth's Diamond Jubilee and visited the Vatican arrived in Sri Lanka early this morning.
