Non-academic strike disrupts work at universities

The strike initiated by the non-academic staff at universities is still in effect.

Work at several universities has been disrupted due to this continuous strike.

Secretary of the Inter University Trade Unions Federation D M Senaratna stated that further discussions will be held with the labour commissioner on the 12th of this month.

When we spoke to Secretary of the Ministry of Higher Education Dr.Sunil Jayanta Navarathne, he confirmed that work at the Colombo and Sabaragamuwa universities were carried out successfully.

However, when we spoke to Vice Chancellor of the Colombo University Prof.Kshanika Hiriburegama regarding this situation, she stated that certain non-academic staff who had reported to work was threatened at the Colombo University.

She added that several examinations were also held at the university.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson of the Kelaniya University also confirmed that work there was carried out amidst the disturbances.
