The Ministry of Cooperatives and Internal Trade Affairs states that the law of using plastic crates for transporting vegetables and fruits will be strictly implemented from today.

The Ministry stated that steps have been taken for all the necessary plastic crates to be issued to vegetable transporters.

Although on several previous occasions attempt had been made to implement this law, it did not come through due opposition by vegetable transporters.

Action was also taken by the police to apprehend those who transported vegetables without plastic baskets.

A ministry spokesman stated that the ministry was keeping a close eye on whether the use of plastic crates was taking place properly.

However our Dambulla Economic Centre reporter stated that no lorries transporting vegetables had arrived at the centre this morning.
