Although the Ministry of Cooperatives and Internal Trade Affairs strictly implemented the law of using plastic crates for transporting vegetables and fruits from today, it was not practiced in many places.
We inquired about this from economic centres islandwide but found that the law was not adhered to.
Chairman of the Manning Market Traders Association Lal Hettigoda speaking to our news team stated that plastic crates were only used to transport fruits.
Meanwhile, traders at the Dambulla Centre noted that they were not informed of the new law.
Although on several previous occasions attempt had been made to implement this law, it did not come through due opposition by vegetable transporters.
A ministry spokesman stated that the ministry was keeping a close eye on whether the use of plastic crates was taking place properly.
