Around 8 houses were severely damaged due to strong winds that were experienced in the Chilaw area last night.

Meanwhile, 10 other houses were also partially damaged.

Residents in the area indicated that the winds were accompanied by heavy rain as well.

Several fish stalls on the Chilaw beach were also damaged by the winds.

Over 90 buildings were damaged islandwide by strong winds that were experienced in several areas.

However, the Met Department warns that due to the Inter-Monsoonal Weather Conditions heavy rains could be experienced in the central hills, the southern coast and the western province.

We asked Duty Meteorologist D A Jayasinghearachchi if these strong winds were considered tornadoes.
