Subsequent to blood tests conducted on about 100 inmates in the New Colombo Magazine Penitentiary none of them were found to be positive for AIDS.
Speaking to our news team Prison Director Emil Ranjan Lamahewage stated that these tests were carried out based on an order issued by the Colombo Magistrate.
An individual who had arrived from abroad was arrested on a charge of drug possession and was subsequently admitted to the prison hospital where the suspect had passed away.
Following the investigation on the death it was discovered that this individual had died due to complications resulting from AIDS.
During the hearing of the case with regards to the deceased, Colombo Additional Magistrate Praharsha Ranasinghe ordered about 220 inmates suspected of having contracted AIDS to be tested at a clinic.
The prison director further stated that the blood tests were carried out according to the order issued by the additional Colombo Magistrate and that the rest of the inmates will be tested in the near future.
