It is reported that an impending risk of forest fires is affecting several parts of the island owing to the dry weather conditions being experienced.
The forest fire which broke out in the Morayaya area in the Randenigala Forest reserve last night is yet to be contained by authorities.
Meanwhile the air force has deployed two of its helicopters to assist in the containment of the fire.
According to the disaster management centre forest fires are said to have broken out in 6 conservations due to the sultry weather conditions being experienced throughout the island.
Deputy Director of the Disaster Management Centre Sarath Lal Kumara states that certain advertant acts of arson had developed into forest fires later on.
Moreover Environmental Organisations have issued several releases concerning the eruption of wildfires in conservations.
National Coordinator of the Centre for Environment Studies, environmentalist Ravindra Kariyawasam states that these fires are caused to human activity.
Kariyawasam notes that officials should implement adequate measures to combat the situation.
