The farmers of Thalawa, Nochchiyagama are engaging in a protest requesting for compensation for their crops that were destroyed due to the lack of water.

The protest is being staged at the Thalawa junction and the roads have been blocked by protesters hampering traffic flow.

The striking farmers state that they will only allow ambulances, military vehicles and school children to pass through.

The farmers allege that they were informed that the water from the Mahaweli would be sufficient for their crops but has not been so.
