About 110 persons have been rescued from the accident that took place
as a result of a vessel carrying a group of refugees capsizing in the
sea in the vicinity of the Christmas Island.

Foreign reports say that about 75 persons are suspected to have been
killed in this accident.

The Foreign Affairs Ministry said that it has so far not been
confirmed as to whether there were Sri Lankans among the dead or the
rescued.

However the Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesman said that it had been
confirmed that there were Afghan and Iranian nationals in the said
vessel.

Last afternoon foreign media had disclosed that a vessel carrying Sri
Lankan refugees had met with an accident in the sea close to
Australia's Christmas Island.

It is said that 200 refugees had travelled in the said vessel.

While this accident had taken place about 120 nautical miles north of
the Christmas Island, the Foreign Affairs Ministry said that reports
with regard to this have been called for from the Sri Lankan High
Commission in Australia and the Sri Lankan Embassy in Indonesia.
