There has been no indication so far that there were Sri Lankans onboard the vessel that capsized off the Christmas Island last night.

109 people including a 13 year old boy were rescued and admitted to hospitals on Christmas Island.

The boat was originally believed to have set sail from Sri Lanka and was said to be carrying Sri Lankan nationals.

However, it was confirmed that the vessel began its voyage from Indonesia.

Australian Interior Minister Jason Claire confirmed that most of the passengers on board were Afghan nationals.

We spoke to Sri Lankan High Commissioner in Australia Vice Admiral Thisara Samarasinghe regarding this incident.

He confirmed that there were no Sri Lankans among the rescued.
