The government is preparing to pay compensation for crops that have been affected by the current drought.
A committee including members from the treasury, the irrigation department, the agrarian services and wildlife department, the agriculture department and the Ministry of Disaster Management was appointed to look into this matter.
A special discussion was held at Temple Trees yesterday under the patronage of President Mahinda Rajapakse to discuss the issues faced by farmers in the North Central province.
Speaking on the occasion the president noted that he and the government were constantly willing to protect the farmer that feeds the nation.
The President also added that this was not the first recorded drought in history and the government has plans to compensate where necessary.
