New detention centre for asylum seekers unveiled

The new detention centre in New Zealand has been unveiled as preparations are made to house 600 male asylum seekers, from Afghanistan, Iraq and Sri Lanka, within coming weeks.

There will be 600 men housed at the Yongah Hill detention camp in Northam.

The Department of Immigration showcased its newest facility today on land near a disused army camp.

The centre was originally meant to house 1,500 men but that figure was revised down by more than half last year.
