Political sources state that the Chief Ministerial candidacy of the North Central provincial council may remain open since the present chief minister of the province Berty Premalal Dissanayaka had held office on two accounts.

It is reported that talks in this regard had been convened between several senior leaders of the SLFP & UPFA.

However Chief Minister of the Sabaragamuwa Province Minister Maheepala Herath states that he will be in contention for the post during the upcoming local government polls.

Minister Herath's comments came during a function held in the Rathnapura Township today.

He also noted that the president's consent had been obtained in this regard.

Meanwhile several leaders of the UPFA have been extended invitations by the UNP to contest the upcoming local government polls for the North Central & Sabaragamuwa provinces under its party banner.

Accordingly several discussions have been convened between the UNP & prospective UPFA candidates.

Former Presidential advisor on agriculture Hemakumara Nanayakkara is said to be at the vanguard of these discussions.

Reports also reveal that the Muslim Congress may join the TNA in contesting the Eastern provincial council.
