A discussion is currently underway at the Ministry of Rehabilitations & Prison reforms under the aegis of subject minister Chandrasiri Gajadheera

where a solution for the hostage situation within the Vavniya prison complex is being sought.

Moreover it is reported that several high-level figures including the Ministry's secretary and the prisons commissioner general are also amongst those heading the discussion table.

Inmates at the vavuniya prison commenced a hunger strike on Wednesday demanding that the inmate who was surrendered over to the Terrorism Investigation Department based on a court order be returned to the complex.

During the ensuing tumult inmates of the Vavuniya prison complex

took three prison guards hostage last evening.

In this light a special team of officers attached to the Colombo prison headquarters were immediately dispatched to the vavuniya prison complex yesterday.

According to our provincial correspondent the 3 officers who are being held hostage are said to be unharmed.
