The Police Special Task Force rescued the three prison officials who were taken hostage yesterday by the inmates at the Vavuniya prison a short while ago.

According to the Acting Police Media Spokesperson, Sajeewa Medawatte stated that the three officials were rescued subsequent to a special rescue operation conducted within the Vavuniya Prison Premises.

Inmates at the Vavuniya prison commenced a hunger strike on Wednesday demanding that the inmate who was surrendered over to the Terrorism Investigation Department based on a court order be returned to the complex.

During the ensuing tumult, inmates of the Vavuniya prison complex took three prison guards hostage last evening.

Meanwhile, according to our correspondent in the area, the inmates at the Vavuniya prison who engaged in a hunger strike have been transferred to the Anuradhapura Prisons Complex.
