The three jailers who were taken hostage by inmates of the Vavuniya prison for a period of three days have been rescued by Special Task Force personnel.
According to Acting Police Spokesperson SP Sajeewa Madawaththa the three prison officials had been extricated subsequent to a special operation.
He also noted that attempts to settle the matter through means of dialogue had proved futile.
Inmates at the vavuniya prison commenced a hunger strike on Wednesday demanding that the inmate who was surrendered over to the Terrorism Investigation Department based on a court order be returned to the complex.
During the ensuing tumult inmates of the Vavuniya prison complex took three prison guards hostage last evening.
The operation to free the three jailers who were being held hostage commenced since officials had deemed it dangerous for them to remain there anyfurther.
Speaking to our news team Acting Police Spokesperson SP Sajeewa Madawaththa expressed these views.
In a bid to ascertain further views in this regard our news team contacted Prisons Commissioner B.W. Kodippili who stated that all inmates of the Vavuniya prison
had been transferred to the Anuradhapura prison complex with immediate effect.
