A LTTE detainee, who was transferred from the Vavuniya prison to the Mahara prison after the tense situation at the Vavuniya Prison complex recently, has passed away this morning.
A spokesperson for the Mahara prison noted that the detainee who was receiving treatment at the prison hospital was transferred to the Ragama Hospital this morning after suddenly taking ill.
The deceased has been identified as a 29 year old resident of Nelumkulama in Vavuniya.
Three officers of the Vavuniya Prison were taken hostage by LTTE detainees there recently and were released after an operation staged by the Special Task Force.
The Prisons Department took measures to transfer these detainees to other prisons after this incident.
Accordingly, 28 LTTE detainees were transferred to the Mahara Prison of which 4 injured are still receiving treatment at the Ragama Hospital.
The spokesperson stated that the deceased had a wound on his hand but the reason for his death has not been determined as yet.
