At least two people have been killed in Peru in clashes between police and demonstrators opposing the multi-billion dollar Conga mining project.

Hundreds of protesters attacked government buildings in the town of Celendin, in the north of the country.

They said the project, financed by US-based company Newmont, will cause pollution and destroy water supplies.

Newmont called a temporary halt to work late last year following similar protests.
